Baby Gate Hacks: Simple Solutions for Common Problems

TACKLING FREQUENT INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES

CRUCIAL INSTALLATION DISCLAIMER

These installations require a specific level of skill; attempting this task without the assistance of a professional may lead to safety hazards and unexpected expenses.

By reading this article, you acknowledge that you have understood and agreed to the terms and conditions specified here: Website Terms & Conditions.

The following examples highlight various difficulties I have encountered during installations, which may resonate with your own experiences and offer practical solutions.

    • Measure the widest point at the top to determine the required dimensions for the gate and any extensions. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
    • When you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder equipped with a metal/aluminium disc to cut the gate accurately, following the measurements depicted in the reference images above.
    • Remove the plastic part from the section you wish to trim and insert it into the cut section of the gate to ensure the tension knob fits correctly.
    • This process will be clearer once you have the gate in hand.

INSTALLATION ISSUE 2: ATTACHING TO A SKEW WALL

ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF INSTALLING ON A SKEW WALL

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

    • Ensure that the gate/extensions are ready for installation.
    • Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a flat surface on the wall.
    • Wait for the Putty to cure fully BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
    • Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures are completed and the gate has been tested for stability.

INSTALLATION ISSUE 3: OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES

NAVIGATING THE CHALLENGE OF OUTDOOR BABY GATE INSTALLATION

While outdoor installations of baby gates can provide a quick and budget-friendly solution, they may also void the warranty on these products.

I recommend that outdoor installations of baby gates be viewed as a temporary and economical measure. This may risk voiding your warranty on the gates.

    • Baby gates are specifically designed for indoor use and are not suitable for outdoor application due to potential exposure to harsh weather conditions.
    • This limitation is clearly stated in the warranty documentation that accompanies the product.
    • Failure to comply with warranty stipulations will result in the loss of warranty coverage.

For a durable solution, consider hiring a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. Although this may involve higher costs, it is the most effective solution.

PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:

Disclaimer: None of these measures guarantee complete rust protection; however, they aim to extend the lifespan of the gate in South African weather conditions.

Regular maintenance every 1-2 months can significantly decrease the likelihood of rust.

To reduce rust and moisture accumulation, follow these guidelines:

    • Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover the base areas thoroughly as well.
    • Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will allow water drainage and prevent rust from developing inside the hollow gate, where moisture may collect at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to avert moisture build-up.
    • Apply a light coating of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
    • Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.

For existing rust:

    • Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product instructions.
    • Refer to the product description on takealot.com; you may need to obtain mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted areas.
    • The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
